Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 2800cpThe Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 2800cp was our first large format printer after the messy ink-splatter experience with the Encad NovaJet Pro 36. The HP printer was so different. Easy to use, higher quality.
Downside was the EFI Fiery RIP, similar awful hardware RIP as the earlier Encad. Fortunately Hewlett-Packard no longer features or favors EFI RIPs. Even HP got the message loud and clear, namely that the EFI Fiery may be a lousy investment. This is a polite way of saying, if you opt for the newer HP DesignJet 5000, be sure to avoid the EFI Fiery RIP. But if you find a model 2800 used, or demo, if it's in good condition, go for it. If the price is under $5,000 for a demo with full factory warranty, or under $3,000 if used on the open market, if you can get a 1 year guarantee, go for it. The dye-based inks for the 2800 is very nice. We never had an opportunity to use its pigmented inks, but have been told by other users that it was not very impressive. The new reformulated UV pigmented inks for the HP model 5000, however, has a great color gamut and we highly recommend it. We use the HP 5000 with pigmented ink almost every day.
