FLAAR offers the first look at the newest Durst Rho 350R roll-to-roll UV-cured inkjet printer

We saw this remarkable new printer at the Visual Communications Milan sign trade show in Italy in mid-November 2005. What was intriguing was the cationic chemistry of its new ink. To our knowledge this is the first large format UV-cured inkjet printer using cationic ink. Unfortunately the cationic ink was a disaster. Luckily this printer works perfectly well on free radical chemistry, so Durst simply abandoned the cationic ink. I admire them for trying the cationic ink, because it is generally considered to be the best ink for the future: if it’s issues with moisture and sometimes unstoppable curing can be overcome.

Other Roll-to-Roll UV-curable Inkjet Printers

NUR was the first to offer a roll-to-roll UV-cured inkjet printer, back in 2004 at DRUPA trade show. This is

the NUR Expedio. NUR now offers their Expedio Inspiration and NUR Expedio Revolution.

Then Durst presented their Rho 350R.

Then Gandinnovations introduced their Jeti 3324 UV RTR printer. We recently visited a sign shop in Lisbon that has this roll-to-roll UV printer. The same sign shop also has a Gandinnovations Jeti flatbed and a Gandy solvent ink printer. Based on two days interviewing the sign shop owners and printer operators we have two new FLAAR Reports on these UV printers.

As soon as funding is available we will undertake a site-visit case study of a Durst Rho 350R. The costs are airfare, meals, hotel, time, then editing and then having the FLAAR graphic design staff prepare the full-color PDF. To do this commercially would be about $10K, but since we are a non-profit research institute we do it for about $4500. But now the site-visit should be to an installation of the newer Durst Rho 351R, which was unveiled at FESPA ’07.

If you went out yourself to inspect print shops it would be expensive for you (especially your time). So it is more efficient and definitely more economical to order the FLAAR Reports from www.wide-format-printers.NET.
