Xerox-Tektronix 7700 GX color laser printers for 11 x 17 inch and tabloid size Print E-mail

The Xerox copier with Splash RIP server has failed totally here in the College of Technology. We checked with another digital imaging facility and they warned us not to buy the Canon color copier. So at Print '01 the faculty of the College of Technology (location of FLAAR USA) selected a Xerox Tektronix. FLAAR itself selected a Minolta-QMS.

To proof your large format prints, rather than use your wide format printer it's quicker and economical to proof on a color laser printer. The Tektronix Phaser 7700 DN, GX or DX from Xerox provides photo-realistic color prints up to 13x19 inches with the appearance of a continuous tone photograph from a professional lab. Yet you don't have to pay $6 to $14 for a dye sub print. How about less than a dollar for a full-sized image, tabloid sized (A3 oversize, 11x17 full bleed or up to 13x19 inch paper).

Both the Xerox Tektronix and the Minolta QMS 6100 (or 6110) should arrive by early December. We will report back how they each work.

We have already tested the Tally T8204 and found its quality quite impressive (www.laser-printer-reviews). Now that Tektronix is available through Xerox we thought it might be an appropriate time to evaluate the 11x17 model of the Tektronix phaser. We have all kinds of colorful full-page photographs available to test on the Tektronix, so as soon as a demo unit arrives we will have the test results available with 72 hours. Then during the entire month we will report on how the Tektronix color laser printer holds up to continuous use, under real conditions. We will show close-up images of the quality this new Xerox color laser printer is capable of.

Since Tektronix was famous for its graphics-quality color laser printers, Xerox simply bought the entire color laser portion of Tektronix. These same productive laser printers are now sold under the dual Xerox-Tektronix name.

We'll also offer suggestions on what is the best (premium) paper to use in a high quality color laser printer such as that of Xerox-Tektronix or Minolta QMS.

In a few days a QMS-Minolta 6100 or 6110 color laser printer will arrive. The QMS Magicolor 2200 is priced at $999, so means you can get color quality at a price of B&W. However we prefer to have 11x17 inch size; actually the QMS 6100 can handle up to 13 x 19 inches.

Its also important to opt for a duplex system. Otherwise it is not possible to print on both sides of a sheet. If you lack auto-duplex, and you attempt to print on the other side, the toner from the first side will be melted off and stick all over the innards of the printer. We did that with our Lexmark and it cost about $ 460 to get it cleaned up and repaired. But if you order an auto-duplex system then you can print on both sides with ease.

If you are unsure which report is best for you, just explain what you intend to print, whether this is for commercial use or in a small fledging business, whether you are new to this or already have another inkjet printer, and so on. This way our staff can judge which FLAAR FREE First Level Reports are most appropriate for you.
