Duster 2000, from Island Clean Air is good for dust removal via air purification for photo studios and signage print shops Print E-mail

Print shop dust air purifiers

A printing company wrote us several months ago asking for consulting on problems with failing printheads. These were the infamous Toshiba Tec heads in an Oce printer.

More printshops have problems with Toshiba Tec heads in an Oce Arizona printer than any other head in any other brand and model of printer. So we suggested the print shop start with applying a Duster air purifier from Island Clean Air.

This week we received the feedback from the printshop management: We purchased the Duster 3000 at your recommendation because of the number of print heads we were going through on our Arizona 350. We are very pleased with the results and feel that is has already paid for itself. Funny story, when the Oce tech guy saw it, he said they come standard now with their units. I can’t quite get my mind around the fact that all the times they were out here on the problems we were having, they never mentioned an air filtering system.

Island Clean Air is the manufacturer of industrial-strength air purifiers. I have visited the ICA headquarters in Vancouver, Canada about 10 years ago.

ICA usually has a booth at SGIA and ISA each year.

ICA air purifiers are for any print shop, of any size,

Whether you have a

  • Solvent printers
  • UV-cured printers
  • Latex ink printers
  • CO2 laser engravers
  • CNC routers

plus any other printing, cutting, or laminating equipment. Naturally some items, such as CO2 laser engravers, may need an air filter system physically attached to the machine.

Air purifiers are needed to diminish health problems

It would be inappropriate to claim that any machine can totally reduce health issues, since an air purifier cleans air which is moving around. Toxic dust may already be on your floors, walls, bookshelves, and in cabinets and closets. So our evaluation is not a medical documentation. But if you do nothing at all, the dust in your office or facility may be serious. So having an air purification system is at least an intelligent first step in creating a more healthy work atmosphere.

Air purifiers may be even more helpful to keep your printheads from having clogged nozzles

One complaint we here from around the world is people who have Oce Arizona printers with Toshiba Tec printheads. Print shop owners and managers say that the printheads fail and they have to spend umpteen thousands of dollars to replace the printheads.

The printer manufacturer claims it is the dust in the air causing the printheads to fail prematurely (claiming it is not the faulty design of the printhead!).

OCE now offers a Duster air filtration system for UV-cured printers

Every Oce Arizona 6100 series UV-cured printer will come with a Duster air filtration system (Duster is distributed by LRM as is Island Clean Air equipment). The need for an air purification system is to keep the dust from causing damage to the printheads of the Oce Arizona printer. The Toshiba Tec heads are old technology and very sensitive to dust and any material from CNC routers, CO2 laser engravers or comparable sources of natural dust or mechanical dust.

Most printers also emit chemical fumes, even though most printer manufacturers claim “no VOCs.” You do not need VOCs to get toxic chemicals from inks. Most inks have unpleasant chemicals far and beyond VOCs.

If you have a CO2 laser, be sure to acquire an air purification system

When we had CO2 laser cutters at the university, students got sick when other students cut Plexiglas-like plastics or other plastic materials. So if you have a CO2 laser cutter, be sure to have an air purification system.

We are now evaluating a Duster 2000 air purification unit

Duster 2000 Serial # 2-0703-1383, Made in Canada by ICA: Island Clean Air. Here are initial comments by the office staff:

  • It is around 4ft high, and 2ft each side
  • It is on day and night, but last Sunday Gustavo took it upstairs to clean from the third floor down.
  • It has wheels, so it can be moved around easily. But Cami said to move it up and down stairs, she preferred to have Gustavo do this.
  • Naturally an air purification system has intake fans which make noise. But Cami said that the Duster from ICA is less noise than the standard floor model of Brand X that you buy at Wal-Mart or Lowes.
  • We are using this air purifier in our photo studio where dust from either local construction or simply normal airborne dust in a city simply piles up. It is frankly amazing how much dust lands on your delicate equipment.
  • I will be back in this office in three weeks and will take more notes. We have no wide-format printers in this office but there is so much dust flying around outside that we really appreciate having a professional air purifier. The ones sold at Wal-Mart and Lowes simply are not adequate.
