54-inch Mimaki JV33-120 and 63-inch Mimaki JV33-160 solvent ink printers

Last year, when I asked why the 54-inch Mimaki JV33-120 and 63 Mimaki JV33-160 solvent ink printers were printing so slowly I was told that it was necessary to slow them down so that the ink would dry!

I have also heard about ink drying problems on the Mimaki JV5.

I do not hear these problems on the

• Mutoh Spitfire Extreme
• Mutoh Rockhopper 3 Extreme
• Mutoh ValueJet
• Mutoh Blizzard
• Roland Advanced Jet AJ-740

The HP 9000S and HP 10000S need an auxiliary dryer to facilitate drying (now you know who so many printshop owners are switching to UV-curable inkjet printers, such as the IP&I Cube 1606, Raster Printers H700UV or Legend 72HUV via Lexjet.

Eventually the Mimaki JV33-120 and Mimaki JV33-160 will resolve the drying issues. On the JV5 you simply have to use an improved ink. The new ink will be ready by late August or early September 2008.

At this point we would be interested in inspecting these Mimaki printers in more detail as well as in inspections to end-users who have them successfully printing without issue. But for the moment, what is of special interest to me is the quality and opacity of the white ink available in the Mimaki JV33. An end-user who tried the Roland white ink said it did not work. When I saw the Roland white ink over two years ago it was not very

impressive. But if Roland can improve their ink, I can take a second look.

Mimaki offers many ink choices.

SS21 ink,

ES3 (third generation eco-solvent ink),

• water-based pigmented ink (as with the older JV22 and JV4)
• Dye-sublimation ink (as with the older JV22 and JV4)

Being able to select from all these kinds of inks is very clever. However most people who want to use water-based inks would also be looking at the HP Z6100 or Canon iPF9000.
